Guide to Dinosaur Fossils in the UK: Where Families Can Actually Find Them

A parent's guide to fossil hunting with kids in the UK — the best beaches, what you'll really find, safety around tides and cliffs, and what to do if you strike lucky.

Here is the good news that surprises most parents: you do not need a museum ticket or a special permit to find a real fossil in the UK. On the right beach, on the right morning, a six-year-old with sharp eyes and a carrier bag can pick up something that is older than the dinosaurs' extinction by a hundred million years. We have done it with our own kids, in drizzle, and it remains one of the best free days out in the country.

This guide covers where to go, what you are realistically going to find (spoiler: probably not a T. rex tooth, and that is fine), the safety rules that matter, and what to do in the unlikely and thrilling event that your child finds something important.

First, a friendly correction: most beach fossils are not dinosaurs

Kids arrive at the beach expecting dinosaur bones. What they will mostly find are the remains of sea creatures, because the famous fossil beaches were seabed when those rocks formed. The classic find is the ammonite: a coiled spiral shell that looks like a snail's but belonged to a sea creature related to modern squid and octopus, anywhere from thumbnail-sized to dinner-plate showpiece. Belemnites are bullet-shaped, smooth, and surprisingly common — they are the internal hard part of a squid-like animal, and kids tend to call them "dinosaur bullets", which is wrong but charming. Then there are crinoids, little star- or disc-shaped segments from "sea lilies" (actually animals), plus fossil oysters and other shells. The curved oyster fossils are traditionally called devil's toenails, which is exactly the kind of fact a seven-year-old will repeat for a month.

Actual dinosaur material does turn up in a few places, most famously on the Isle of Wight, and there are dinosaur footprints you can see on more than one British coast. But if you set expectations at "we are hunting ancient sea monsters and might get lucky with a dinosaur", nobody goes home disappointed.

The Jurassic Coast: Charmouth and Lyme Regis, Dorset

If you only ever do one fossil trip, do this one. The stretch of Dorset coast around Charmouth and Lyme Regis is the most reliable family fossil-hunting spot in the country. The crumbling cliffs constantly release fossils onto the beach, so the "hunting" is mostly beachcombing: walking slowly, scanning the loose stones and gravel patches between the tide lines.

This is also Mary Anning country. She grew up in Lyme Regis in the early 1800s and, as a young woman with no formal training, found spectacular marine reptile skeletons that helped change how scientists understood the ancient world. Kids, especially daughters who have been told science is for someone else, tend to find her story inspiring, and both towns lean into it with museums and statues.

Practical notes for this stretch of coast:

  • Go at low tide, on a falling tide. More beach is exposed and you are walking away from danger rather than into it.
  • The best hunting is often after rough winter weather, when the sea has churned up fresh material. Summer works too, it is just more picked over.
  • You do not need a hammer. The best finds here are lying loose on the beach. Little kids do brilliantly because they are closer to the ground and take it seriously.
  • Follow the local fossil collecting code. West Dorset has an agreed code for collectors, the West Dorset Fossil Collecting Code of Conduct: broadly, you may pick up loose fossils from the beach, you must not dig into or hammer the cliffs, and important finds should be recorded. The heritage centre at Charmouth is the place to ask, and it also runs guided fossil walks that are worth booking for a first visit, because a guide will find things in ten minutes that you would walk straight past.

The Isle of Wight: Britain's dinosaur island

For actual dinosaurs, the Isle of Wight is the place. It is one of the richest dinosaur localities in Europe, and the beaches on the island's south-west coast produce genuine dinosaur bone fragments along with the usual fossil shells and wood. Iguanodon material has been found here, along with many other species, and new dinosaurs are still being described from island finds.

Families come for two things. The first is footprints: at low tide in the Compton Bay area you can see large three-toed dinosaur footprint casts in the rocks on the shore. Standing your child's welly inside a real dinosaur footprint is a core-memory moment and costs nothing. Check the tide times before you go, because the prints cover as the tide comes in.

The second is the dinosaur museum at Sandown, a proper collection of island finds with staff who will happily look at whatever your child has picked up on the beach. Guided fossil walks run on the island too, and as at Charmouth, they are the fastest way to learn what you are looking at.

The same rules apply: collect loose material from the beach, leave the cliffs alone, and treat anything that looks like bone with a bit of care.

The Yorkshire coast: Whitby and the Dinosaur Coast

The stretch of coast around Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Staithes is superb for ammonites, which often turn up sealed inside rounded stones called nodules. Local legend says the ammonites are snakes turned to stone by the Saxon abbess St Hilda, which is why old Whitby ammonite carvings sometimes have snake heads added. Yorkshire folk were selling "snakestones" to visitors centuries before anyone knew what a fossil was.

Further south towards Scarborough, this coastline has produced dinosaur footprints and is sometimes promoted as the Dinosaur Coast. As with Dorset, the sensible family approach is beachcombing at low tide below the cliffs, not digging into them. The rock here is harder than Dorset's, so this is the one region where older children sometimes get to (carefully, with adult hands and eye protection) crack open a loose beach nodule to see if an ammonite is hiding inside. Loose nodules only, never the cliff face.

Safety: the part to actually read

Fossil beaches are safe if you respect two things, and genuinely dangerous if you do not.

  1. Tides. Several of the best fossil beaches can cut you off as the tide rises. Check the tide times for the specific beach on the day, start your walk on a falling tide, and turn back earlier than feels necessary. A phone tide app or the noticeboard at the beach car park takes thirty seconds.
  2. Cliffs. Fossil-rich cliffs are fossil-rich precisely because they crumble. Rockfalls and mudslides happen without warning, especially after rain. Do not sit under cliffs for lunch, do not let kids climb or dig into them, and do the hunting on the open foreshore. Everything worth finding falls out on its own eventually.

Beyond that: wellies or boots with grip, warm layers even in summer (British beaches specialise in wind), and keep small children within reach on slippery rock ledges.

What to bring

Less than you think. A sensible family kit is:

  • A rucksack and a few small bags or tubs for finds
  • Kitchen roll or newspaper to wrap anything fragile
  • A phone for photos, tide times and marking where you found something
  • Snacks, because fossil hunting is 90% slow walking and small people run out of patience exactly when the finds start
  • Optional: a cheap magnifying glass, which makes everything feel more scientific

You will notice a hammer is not on the list. On most family beaches you do not need one and should not use one on the cliffs anywhere. If older kids want to split loose Yorkshire nodules, that is an adult-supervised job with eye protection.

"Is this a fossil?" — identifying finds

The honest test: fossils usually have regular structure. A spiral with ribs is an ammonite. A smooth, heavy, pencil-shaped stone with a pointed end is probably a belemnite. Little stone discs or stars are crinoid segments. A thick curved shell is likely a fossil oyster. Bone tends to look fibrous or spongy inside, quite different from pebble.

When in doubt, take it to the local heritage centre or museum, all of the areas above have one, and the staff enjoy identifying children's finds. Between trips, a rainy afternoon on our dinosaur quiz or browsing the explorer keeps the enthusiasm warm.

If your child finds something special

It happens. Kids have found scientifically important fossils on British beaches, partly because they look more carefully than adults do. If you turn up something that looks like bone, a large section of skeleton, or anything unusual:

  1. Photograph it where it lies, with something for scale, before moving it.
  2. Note exactly where you found it. A phone map pin is perfect.
  3. Tell the local fossil centre or museum. On the Dorset coast, important finds should be recorded with the local heritage centre under the collecting code. Elsewhere, the nearest museum with a geology collection is the right first call. Nobody is going to tell you off; recording finds is how science gets done, and your child may end up credited with a real discovery.

One caution: if a large fossil is embedded in the cliff or in solid rock, leave it and report it. Extracting it is a job for people with permission and plasters.

The short version

Pick a low tide, pick Charmouth, the Isle of Wight or Whitby, keep away from the cliff base, and let the kids scan the loose stones. You will almost certainly come home with ammonites and belemnites, a bag of "maybe" pebbles that are definitely just pebbles, and a child who now wants to be a palaeontologist. There are worse outcomes for a free day at the beach.
